  • When you redeploy and/or reuse - who are the recipients of those devices?
As far as redeployment; we handle that ourselves, or work with brokers that maintain connections for redeployment. For example: A company wants to update a fleet of 3-5 year old laptops that no longer operate at peak for their employees, those laptops are redeployed with new hard drives and updated operating software for another entity to use. (Items that are re-furbishable fit into this category too.) Also, sometimes there is an item that's mostly intact but no longer functional that is then used for parts to refurbish another item.
  • Do you offer payouts?
In some instances offer pay outs for newer computers and laptops.
  • What happens to personal data?
We check every computer we receive. If we come across an item with a hard drive it is removed, physically destroyed, and recycled properly. In some cases our corporate accounts handle sensitive or proprietary information and need a certificate of destruction for their records. We are able to provide the COD processed from our location, or if it's required we can complete destruction at the client’s offices/warehouse.
  • Is there anything I can do to make this process smoother?
Sure! •When it comes to computers; ready any items by backing up the information you want to keep. We move fast with hard drive crushing and recycling. •If the item you're getting rid of is a cellphone or tablet, sign out of it and factory reset the device (if you want to be redeployed). •If we are doing a corporate pick up for you please gather all items into one place. • If you wish to recycle your used toner or ink cartridges, please place the cartridges in a bag so they do not leak.
  • Why choose Reboot?
Our process cuts down on consumerism, pollution, and waste. It also connects collectors and users with the items they are looking for. Once an item is picked up by us, Reboot processes, tests, catalogues, and connects these items to users that see value in them. It is an integral part of actually reducing waste from the recycling process; other major recyclers strip valuable materials from sometimes functional items. We like to see e-waste end-of-life be as long as possible before it ultimately ends up being recycled. Last year we primarily worked with larger corporate accounts (and still do!) We collected over 100,000 pounds of e-waste; much of it was able to be redeployed. This year, we are on par to double that! We are committed to growing our program by making e-waste recycling more convenient at the residential level. We were hearing individuals say they had old cords, speakers, phones, radios, or laptops they didn’t want, and didn't know what to do with them, so unfortunately they just threw them away. Instead of the community bringing these items to us directly in Cheviot, we found it would be more more effective to place bins strategically around the Tri-State area for residents to utilize. Since placing the drop-off bins we are well on our way to significantly raise our pounds of e-waste redeployed over recycled! We have had an enormously positive response to our mission and services from our community, and we are so grateful!
  • What items do you accept?
Electronics. Computers, servers, laptops, printers, tablets, and phones are generally what comes to mind when someone thinks of e-waste. However, we take much more than that! For example: old radios, speakers, cameras, power tools, certain batteries, treadmills, (window) air conditioner units, small household appliances, fans, and any cords/cables to name a few. In addition to electronics: We accept unused toners and inks, used OEM toner and ink cartridges. We will take certain T.V.s*, however, we charge $30.00 per T.V. to ensure this difficult to recycle item is recycled properly. *We do not take CRT or Plasma T.V.s or Monitors
  • When you up-cycle or recycle who are you working with and/ or does it depend upon what the content looks like?
This definitely depends, in some instances we take scrap metal with the e-waste, since some of our corporate accounts mix it together. What we accept with our bins and corporate services though, is electronics waste only. If we host a recycling drive event for a community we accept larger items, for example treadmills. We also take larger items at our brick and mortar location in Cheviot, Ohio. When we get these items we process and separate everything. As we go through that process we set aside items that are: re-deployable, re-furbishable, recyclable, and up-cyclable. I would define them as: re-deployable: ready to go back to work (outside of replacing hard drives since we pull these out, drill and recycle properly for safety reasons). re-furbishable: may be broken or missing parts. We, or a partner, are able to fix and redeploy. recyclable: end of life and properly dismantled to be recycled. up-cyclable: end of life as a usable item, but able to be reimagined in some way. For recycling: we work with several recyclers that break down the items to their basic materials- primarily they are getting raw materials like: tired old broken brass faucets and light fixtures, broken appliances, or mixed shred. Although direct recycling is our last choice. For up-cycling: we have a few connections with local creators, including ourselves, to make art like custom lamps and sculptures to name a few...
  • How much do your services cost?
•We will process/recycle any electronic item we accept for free. •Depending on your location and the amount of items you need picked up, we can schedule our truck and team to come to you for collection. (If you are far from us there could be a fee for the pick up based off mileage.) •No charge for a Certificate of Destruction. (If clients want hard drives destroyed on site before leaving their premises for recycling there may be a fee.) •We charge 30.00 per T.V.* to ensure this difficult to recycle item is recycled properly. • Drop-off bin hosting and use is free. *We do not accept CRT Monitors or Televisions.
  • What items do you not accept?
We do not accept items that are not electronics (except unused toner and ink cartridges), lightbulbs, single use batteries, CRT T.V.s, CRT Monitors, Tube or Plasma T.V.s.
  • Can you tell me more about corporate pick-ups?
If you would like to schedule a corporate pick up, you can call us, email us, or use the corporate pick up form on our website. •Let us know approximately how large of a pick-up you have so we can send the appropriate team, tools, and truck. •Let us know if you have dock access. We can drop off a gaylord box (4’x4’x4’) for you to fill if you have dock access and/or doorways large enough to fit it through - or we can bring our bins and carts to help load it on our truck. • We ask that you gather all items in to one place so its easier to clear out • Let us know who and where we will be meeting along with any pertinent addresses, phone numbers, or codes.
  • What else should we know about Reboot?
In addition to our drop-off bins, corporate accounts, and pick ups, we offer recycling at community events like: Up-Cycle Day in the City of Wyoming, Community Clean up Events, and E-waste specific drives for businesses and non-profits. If you know of a great hosting location for an E-waste drop-off bin let us know! We are always looking to expend our locations. Currently, we are in: Ft. Thomas, Ky at Christ Church UCC, Oakley at MadTree Brewing, Cheviot at Reboot HQ, Green Township at Hillside Christian Academy, City of Wyoming at Oak Park. And we have more locations in the works! What happens to what's collected? What sets us apart from others is our commitment to redeployment, reuse, or refurbishing before recycling. Recycling still creates some waste and toxic emissions. Much of what's valuable in electronics is stripped away, leaving less valuable bits to potentially end up in the land fill. Breaking the items down can be hazardous; especially creating airborne pollutants. We put in the work to collect, test, scrutinize completeness/condition, catalog, store, and connect these items with new users. This process keeps these items in use longer therefore cutting down on consumerism and the byproduct of recycling. If an item is obsolete or unfixable, it will be recycled properly, or in some cases upcycled. If an item has a hard drive- we remove, drill, and recycle it thereby keeping all private, personal information from being at risk.
  • Is there any data you collect so we can track the amount recycled?
If you would like, we can keep track of the drop-off weights for your bin and provide a monthly, quarterly, or annual report letting each host know specifically how effective their bin is. There is no charge for our bin services and no contract. We have not had any issues with our bins being misused or had items left outside of the bins.
  • How frequently do you collect?
When we place a new bin we like to check it at least twice a week for a while to start. We are then able to see how much it’s being used and gauge the checks based on that information.
  • What are the bin dimensions?
Currently we only have one style of bin. It is 4' wide by 4' deep and stands almost 6' tall. It's very similar to most clothing or book donation bins you see around town.
